What Is a Dental Bone Graft?
A bone graft is a procedure used to rebuild or restore bone in the jaw that may have been lost due to injury, infection, or tooth loss. During the procedure, bone material is placed in areas where the bone has weakened or deteriorated, helping to stimulate new bone growth. This is often necessary before procedures like dental implants, as sufficient bone is needed to secure the implant. At Middle Tennessee Oral and Implant Surgery, Dr. Mark Hardison and Dr. Jeff Warden offer dental bone grafts to help patients in Murfreesboro and Smyrna, TN, regain a strong and healthy foundation for their smiles.

Middle Tennessee Oral and Implant Surgery Reviews
Awesome!!
Everyone at Dr. Hardison’s office were great, very personable and friendly. My procedure was explained w/o being rushed and I left feeling very confidant about my surgery.
I was super nervous, but everyone did their best to make me feel comfortable and safe. So dar, it feels like the doctor did a great job with my wisdom teeth extractions! Overall a pleasant experience.
The nurse in our room was excellent. She came equipped with Detail. She had compassion to speak so that I could understand and her compassion relieved my anxiety for the procedure and the process, and they cared enough about me to ask what my needs were and where I was at, and not judge For that I really look forward to having the process done in the hospital. Thank you.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is bone grafting necessary before getting dental implants?
In many cases, yes. If your jawbone isn’t thick enough or dense enough to support an implant, bone grafting creates a more stable foundation. Our team at Middle Tennessee Oral and Implant Surgery can evaluate your bone structure and determine if a graft is needed for successful implant placement.
Can bone grafting be done at the same time as tooth extraction?
Yes, in many cases, a bone graft can be placed immediately after a tooth is removed to preserve the bone and prepare for a future implant. Our team will assess your oral health and determine the best timing for your graft based on your treatment plan.
How long does it take to recover from a bone graft?
Recovery timelines can vary depending on the size and location of the graft, but most patients can return to daily activities within a few days. Complete healing and bone integration may take several months. Our team will monitor your healing and guide you through every stage of the recovery process.
How Is a Bone Graft Performed?
When you arrive for your bone graft, local anesthesia will be administered to numb the area, ensuring you're comfortable throughout the process. In some cases, a sedative may also be offered if you're feeling anxious. During the procedure, bone material is placed into the area where the bone is missing. This material could be taken from another part of your body, a donor source, or be synthetic. The graft is carefully positioned, and the area is closed with sutures. Afterward, you'll be given post-operative care instructions, including how to manage swelling and discomfort. Over time, the graft will integrate with the natural bone, promoting new bone growth to prepare for dental implants or restore the jaw's natural structure.
